DRAW WITH ME

a drawing project exploring native flora in the Western suburbs of Adelaide

grasslands - draw with me

Hello, my name is Louise and I am an Artist that lives in the inner western suburbs of Adelaide.  I would like to invite you to join me in my virtual studio on a journey as I attempt to make a drawing a day with my children at home responding to a new plant each day.  We will be using a list of plants in the Spear-Grass & Wallaby-Grass Grassland that once existed in the Western suburbs of Adelaide, including 80 plants.

Share your work and lets all create an online exhibition by posting it on Instagram with the hashtag: #grasslandsdrawwithme
(if you are not on Instagram you can email them to me and I will post them) Follow along at: @grasslands.drawwithme

This is a project that is open to everyone of any age (children will need an adult to help them to navigate the hunt to the photo of the plant)

Materials.

You do not need special materials for this and you do not need to buy new things (try and find things you already have at home):
paper, paper packaging, recycled paper, reuse old drawings, newspaper, etc  (I will be recycling old drawings to re-draw onto)

Keep your paper all the same size (it can be a mix of paper) .  I recommend having them all at a rough postcard size (my paper is all: 12.5 x 17.5cm) .  You can use different types of paper during the process just keep them the same size.

Drawing implements:
(Anything that makes a mark)
pencils, pens, felt tip pens, biros, ink and brush , paint, textas, charcoal, pastels , crayons etc

Plant hunt.

Each day I will announce the name of a plant to draw on Instagram @grasslands.drawwithme
You can hunt for a photo using the Seeds of South Australia website

  • for example the first plant will be: Acacia acinacea (Wreath Wattle)

  • Go to: https://spapps.environment.sa.gov.au/SeedsOfSA/home.html

  • Click on: Search

  • Click on: Using Scientific Name

  • Type in the GENUS box: Acacia (first word of name only)

  • Click search

  • Go through the names of the Acacia’s and find Acacia acinacea  and click on that.

  • You will then be taken to a page with photos of that plant.

  • Choose one photo to work from

And draw.

Draw your plant how ever you would like (maybe set yourself a time limit to draw each day)
Find a blank wall at home that you can slowly fill with drawings.  Build the art work over time .
You can join me just for one day, a few days, every day - it is up to you!!

I might load up a few videos of drawing exercises at some point to help you to gear up to draw - watch this space...

Because I am doing this while also teaching and caring for my children there may be some days where it just doesn’t happen and we need a day off - or I get carried away in the garden and forgot to draw - bare with me...

I am learning as I do this and I am sure I will refine and make things better as I go along.  Send me a message if you have any suggestions or comments.
